Martial Arts and Fitness

Martial arts aren't just for learning how to fight. They increase flexibility, reaction time, and teach discipline. A martial artist may even find extra incentive to stick to that diet and exercise ...

Ultimate Fitness for Martial Arts
Ultimate Fitness for Martial Arts

What martial arts has done for me, and maybe can do for you!

One day last year, on a cold Saturday morning, I woke up earlier than normal for some reason. Stepping into the bathroom in order to take a shower, I stopped in front of the full sized mirror that my wife had me install the weekend before. As I was looking at myself, I really became disgusted. I decided to step on the scale, a common household item that I avoided like the plague. 283 it read. I just shook my head. I weighed 226 when I met my future wife, and I had really let myself go. It was at that moment, I decided that I had to make changes in my day to day life.

I had already lost weight once. I lost over 50 lbs in my early 20's, so losing weight wasn't any mystifying process. Something was different on this attempt though, the desire I had before wasn't there. I knew I had to do it, I just didn't have the drive. Then one night my 11 year old stepson came to me and told me he wanted to start practicing karate. I took him to his first class the next night. The instructor must have seen the interest in the class that night, because he invited me to bring some gym clothes to the next class. I did, and it was all downhill from there.

My first actual martial arts class , being a 280 lb clumsy oaf must have been so funny to watch. My instructor (sensei) was patient with me and my stepson, constantly fixing our stances, correcting our hand positions for our techniques, and I was having a blast! I absolutely loved it. I learned my first kata (taikyoku shodan , or first cause #1), I really thought I had accomplished something. After a few classes, I started studying martial arts history and philosophy at home. When I was in the gym, I found the desire I once had for working out was back! I wanted to be in the best shape I could in order to increase my proficiency in my art.

As I progressed in my martial arts career, I also noticed my gi (training uniform) was fitting a lot looser than it had when I started. I was actually losing weight! I had my first grading in march, I tested for red belt which is 9th kyu (10 total kyu grades until shodan, or black belt). At that point I weighed 250 or so, so I had made significant gains in my goal to lose weight. I kept getting better, and stronger, and more flexible. I entered my first national tournament in august and walked away a American Jukido Ryu National Champion. I've steadily dropped weight until baseball season this year. During and after the season, the weight training stopped, but the martial arts remained. I was down to 235 at my lowest when I was exercising. I've never been above 240 since I've stopped. I'm getting back at it now, I found a new gym in the town I live in. I've been running consistently again, and I have been faithful about practicing my art.

What's the point of this entire article. I could have said that martial arts can help keep one motivated. Martial arts can do a lot more than that. About a month ago, my wife and I were out at an outdoor concert. This guy was harassing my wife. I politely asked him to leave us alone, he got belligerent with me. He then took a swing, which was met with a strong outside V block which may have broken his arm when it contacted my elbow. After a palm strike to his solar plexus, he went down. I was escorted out of the venue (charges weren't filed because of witnesses saying I was defending myself) and he was carried out. Karate works regardless of what some people claim. It only takes one incident like the one I went through to make one glad he/she practices.

I felt silly at first when I started training. I've come to find out that martial arts can not only have an effect on your physical state, but it can help your mental state as well. I'm a lot more calm then I have ever been. If anyone is thinking about taking up a martial art, go ahead and take a class, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Update :

I originally wrote this article in September of 05. A lot has changed since then. I'm now 3rd kyu and a little over a year away from a black belt. I'm still kicking around 240 so the martial arts helped me keep my weight off.

I am 36, and am interested in persuing martial arts (again) for fitness and health. Is there any websites for forums for beginning martial arts, and/or martial arts being used for fitness?

Thank you
Answer :
try bullshido.net for a "non-art specific" site. they lean towards sportative styles but better that than some mma or tma hating site. they also have a wealth of fitness info and links to it over there.

Rest... for Your Heart's Sake
Do you periodically get only a few hours of sleep? The answer for most of us, "Well, yes." Shift workers... parents with young children (or with teens who stay out past their curfew!)... students cramming for tests... employees stressing about office work... we all have reasons why we skimp on those eight hours of snooze time.

According to a new medical study, however, even just a few days of sleep deprivation can increase your risk for heart disease. The researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's school of medicine in Philadelphia restricted the sleep of a group of healthy individuals to four hours a night for five nights. After the restricted sleeping period ended, the individuals in the study typically showed an increased strain on their hearts. The next phase of the study will examine whether periodic recovery periods can help to compensate for those lost hours of sleep. For now, the take-home (and take to bed) message is: when possible, change your habits to get those z's!

Permanent Make-Up May Have Adverse Consequences
"I feel pretty, oh so pretty..." when I take the time to apply my makeup properly. It's the time factor, though, that sometimes makes me settle for a quick dust of powder, a brush with the mascara wand, and a once-over-lightly with the lip gloss. At such times, I contemplate whether one of the so-called permanent makeup solutions might be worth the cost.

A new report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, has me rethinking that wisdom. The FDA cautions that using that type of makeup may result in adverse reactions, such as swelling, bumps, and redness in the locations where the permanent makeup has been applied. And those symptoms don't vanish overnight: the problems lingered from five months to over three years. If you've had an adverse reaction to a permanent makeup procedure, the FDA wants to hear from you: call the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Adverse Events Reporting System at 301-436-2405 or email them at caers@csfan.fda.gov.

Eat Fish: The "Eyes" Have It
If "eat more fish" has been on your goals list for a loooong time, here's yet another reason to make that goal a reality: it just may help you see the world more clearly. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, contained in fish, help to protect against deterioration of the retina, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, the University of Goteborg in Sweden, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The results of the study may have implications for a variety of eye ailments, including diabetic retinopathy, which causes blood vessels to swell and leak fluid or grow abnormally on the retina's surface, and age-related macular degeneration, shown to be a leading cause of vision loss in Americans age 60 and older.

During their research, the medical experts compared the results of a diet higher in omega-3 fatty acids than omega-6 fatty acids and one with smaller amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Those results, in addition to other studies, made it clear that omega-3 fatty acids were the winner. So if you're debating between steak and salmon tonight for dinner, skip the "moo" and get seaworthy!

Yes, I say finally. Although it has always been recommended to have at least 3 meals a day and to not skip meals, there hasn't been a study that can really back this up. Now there is!

This is a constant battle with my husband who thinks that because he is a mechanic, does a lot of physical work and eats one or two times a day he should be at a better weight and healthier. I know he is not alone in his thinking.

There are two recently published articles referring to the same study at different time frames indicating that having regular feedings is better than having one big meal a day. First, it was observed that, although there was slightly more weight loss in those that had one meal a day, these individuals also had significant increases in total cholesterol, LDL or bad cholesterol, and blood pressure.

The second article includes further analysis of the same group and showed that morning fasting blood sugar levels were higher in the one meal group. This group also had higher blood sugar levels throughout the day and a delayed response to insulin compared with the three-meal-a-day group.

So, are a few more pounds worth getting sick over? I don't think so, and I will surely show this to my husband when he gets home!

Question :

Losing the college weight?

Hi all,

I m graduating from college soon and I ve gained a lot of weight (about 17 pounds) as an undergrad. Part of it was getting healthy (I was a bit underweight before freshman year), and part of it was getting fat by not exercising enough. Sleep deprivation, doing tons of activities and studying, and eating more junk food has taken a toll. I don t drink much at all.
However, in general, I am a healthy person -- I like to be active, it s just that my schedule is so irregular and unpredictable in college that I can t seem to make regular time for workouts.
Basically, my question is (for all those who ve graduated college already): Did you find it feasible to lose weight after college? Did getting into a routine (like a 9-5 job) and a better sleep schedule make you healthier? How many of you got into better shape after college? I m holding out hope that maybe I can finally get my fitness back after I graduate from here.

Thanks so much for any advice.
Answer :
I had weight gain creep up on me, like a lot of people do, but not specifically related to college. It did include not enough sleep, bad choices in eating, not enough exercise. Also with time passing, a change in metabolism is pretty common.

I was always active and ate fairly healthy, but moving toward eating more whole foods and avoiding processed and restaurant foods really helped. Also adding more fruits and veggies.

I did cardio exercise all my life and never really saw big improvements. When I started strength training, that really turned things around for me in dramatic ways. A pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day, but a pound of fat just 5. It is so easy to lose muscle over time, which is a big part of why metabolism slows down.

If I had to pick what made the biggest change, I would say switching to strength training. You only need to work out 15-30 minutes three times a week. But do also eat a healthy diet and make wise choices there.

Question :

Will I lose weight if I follow this plan?

I am a 27 year old man and I weight 260 pounds. (Some muscle but mostly fat.)
I have been literally overweight my entire life. I have had eating problems when I was younger, but I eat a more balanced diet now. The problem has been that I haven t eaten enough. My doctor told me I was essentially putting my body in "starvation mode" because I don t eat often. I have never been good about eating breakfast, and often only eat one meal a day. I have studied nutrition and fitness and I want to implement what I have learned and finally change my lifestyle permanently.
I m sick of being trapped in this body, sick of being overweight. No one makes fun of me, but I ve always been my own worst enemy if you know what I mean.

(I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so I have to try and keep things low impact and easy on the joints.)

Exercise plan starting out: Walking 4-4.5mph for an hour 6 days a week, Light weight lifting 2-3x week (free weights at first and later gym equipment.) Mainly concentrating on increasing upper body strength and alternating muscle groups. Muscle burns calories right?

Getting plenty of sleep is important and something I need to work on.

Diet: I have been eating an average of 2000 calories a day sometimes less sometimes more. Mostly frozen pre prepared stuff. :/

I plan on increasing the calorie count to 3,000 calories a day and making my meals on a regular schedule. 4 small meals and a couple of snacks. Small portions and eating more often should speed up my metabolism I think. I want to include lots of high fiber veggies which is the hardest part for me. I get plenty of fruit, but will continue to eat as much raw veggies as I can.
I have already started drinking nothing but water and juice with juice being 100% and only very sparingly.

One question in particular would be if the "V8 V-fusions" are healthy? I like these and they are supposed to provide a full serving of fruits and a full serving of vegetables. Is there any downside as long as I don t over do it on that juice?

I have had hypothyroidism before but I have recently got that corrected and now my thyroid hormones are perfect according to the tests.

Any specific tips for getting out of the "starvation mode"? Is there anything wrong with my plan so far? My goal is just to overall be healthier and happier, but also I want to lose at least 60 pounds (I would be ecstatic with losing even 30.) and figure it will take at least a year. Is this correct? I don t expect results overnight. Thanks for any input or advice!

It s going to be a lot of work, but I have the free time now, and I am excited to get this done!
Answer :
Changing diets can be SUPER STRESSFUL, in my opinion. Yes, as you said, it will be hard in the beginning, but get into a lifestyle that you can live with that you don t have to think about every second of every day. That can make you resort back to old eating habits. I m in your same boat, only I m on the track to gain weight. The exercise you mentioned sounds good and dandy, but you might, just might, get sick and tired of doing that same thing over and over again. I would suggest mixing things up a bit, dancing, rollerskating, cycling, etc. Also, if you re looking for a straightforward plan to eating without have to stress about buying the right food and whatnot, just eat all foods natural and whole...which means, if it comes in a box, it s probably not going to be the best option. Also, try making your own breads the old way (yeast and ferment overnight instead of instant), as a homemade wheat bread will greatly contribute to your diet. Having things like this will set your appetite straight, whereas those empty calorie junk foods and supposed packaged "health foods" were leaving you craving sugars, sodium, etc. If you re looking for juice, juice the fruits and veggies yourself. Grab up one of those nifty juicer machines, grind in tons of vegetables, and I find that apples/grapes/carrots sweeten it up a bit so all the veggies don t taste extreme (I would also suggest eating kale this way, an extremely healthful food that your body needs).
As for getting out of starvation mode, the simple grazing technique should do the trick. Don t give up treats though. Treats like: red wine, organic coffee, dark chocolate, etc. still pack plenty of healthful benefits while still giving a sense of pleasure.
All in all, turn this into a lifestyle that you can live with and not stress about. It seems like you have the motivation and drive and I say, strive on!

Fitness Bret Michaels: Eat Like a Rock Star

In this exclusive interview, Bret Michaels shares his thoughts on life, music and living with diabetes.

Bret Michaels: Eat Like a Rock Star Diabetes Articles
Bret Michaels: Eat Like a Rock Star Diabetes Articles

By Pamela Ofstein MS, RD, LDN
Director of Nutrition Services

Howdo you eat like a rock star? One would think that is pretty easy - load up on everything from chef prepared meals to truckstop delicacies, add a few adult beverages - okay, maybe a bit more of these than the average non-rocker -and you are living it like you are on tour! To most of us, it seems like a bit of excess and good times, but it isn't like this for all rock stars!

*Photo modified to make Pam happy

Take Bret Michaels, forexample, amusician, reality star, business and family man -living the rock star life is something he takes very seriously. His music, family, friends and health are what he is all about! Health? You bet!

Bret Michaelsis a type-1 diabetic who has been living with the disease since the age of six. When it comes down to understanding how to live with diabetes -and keep up with a lifestyle many of us only read about -he really gets it.

Most of us understand that eating well, keeping it balanced and portioned goes hand-in-hand with keeping our weight in check and staying healthy. But for those living with diabetes daily, there areoften many more ups and downs.

So when the American Diabetic Association collaborated with Bret Michaels as the face of National Diabetes Month, I was rockin'! I have been playing Open Up and Say Ahh! (favorite Poison album) for years now and to combine an interview with my favorite rocker andtalking about my passion, nutrition? Life Rocks!

Bret (we are on a first name basis now) was awesome about opening up and talking frankly about his lifestyle how he lives with diabetes daily. Even with allthe success, money and fame, he doesn'tbeleive in changing who you are or what you do - this hands on rock star lives in the real world and deals with the real issues, like food, eating out, and finding time to exercise.

Of course me being me, I wanted to know how he does what he does (nutrition and fitness) to keep it all together. Here's all about Bret Michaels - Rocking with Diabetes:

Do you (want to - hint, hint) work with a dietitian or have you in the past?

Bret: Absolutely. Early on I worked a lot with a dietitian learning how to balance nutrients, portion out foods - sizes; now I go at it on my own.

When it comes to nutrition, how do you manage fitting in your meals and checking blood sugar levels with your schedule?

Bret: I deal with diet on a regular basis. Look at a rock star schedule, it is insane. Up one night till 3 am, then the next till 5 am...it goes on and on. Regardless, I am up early in the morning (same time regardless), checking my blood sugar, taking my insulin, and then starting with whatever breakfast it is for that day.

How do you manage your insulin levels?

Bret: Generally, it takes about four insulin shots a day andabout 6-8 blood finger pricks. I have to check a lot. I heal and deal with being a diabetic, but sometimes I over check to deal with it.

Okay, that leads me to how and what do you normally eat? What kind of plan works for you?

Bret: I live a fairly un-pampered life. I am what I like to call, a hands on rock star. I don't live in this bubble. I live in the real world and deal with real food. I have seen more truck stops and truck-stop food than anyone can handle. I have to make adjustments wherever I go.

One thing is I like is to make eating fun and eat what I like. For example, this morning I ate ground turkey andsteamed broccoli with a bit of cheese. Why do I just have to have breakfast, why can't I make what I want? Breaking up a routine and having breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast switches it up a bit for me. I like to eat good stuff. My rule of thumb is keeping it to the size of your fist - it's all about portions.

Life is all about being custom built. You need to build the plan for you. Either things work for you or they don't. Plan it around you - if you work nine to five - find a way.

Any days you go a bit crazy when it comes to indulgences (keeping it rated G here)?

Bret: Football Sunday is the day. Looking at a pizza, my hand finds its way to a slice. That is the day I indulge a bit - pizza - who doesn't like pizza? But if I have an extra slice, it is right back on the bike again. Even if it is a little something wrong, like eating more than normal, I find a way to accept it and make the situation better -for example, by exercising. I am not perfect.

Do you have a standard exercise routine?

Bret: Well, as I am talking to you I am on my tour bus mountain biking (the mountain bike is stationary of course). No excuse, put it to use is what I say. You have to make it work and fit it in. I do half my interviews while I am on the treadmill or doing something to burn the calories. But sometimes it is tougher. I have to fit it in. Take for instance when my daughter has swimming practice, her time is a set time that can't be messed with. My solution, I work out in the pool - I incorporate my real life into a routine.

You have been living with it since you were six, how do you think individuals living with diabetes can get over the hump and make it (diet, nutrition, exercise, lifestyle) work for them? Any words of advice?

Bret: Some individuals I meet are great and totally seem to get it; others are mentally not there yet or not realizing they have to take their insulin or work with their diet. You and I agree on one thing, it is baby steps - brick by brick you will get there. If you fall, you get back up again - no looking back.

Bret: We all have access to someone - a social network to someone is important so you aren't alone. Get on a site and surround yourself with people who are trying to reach the same goals. You don't want to feel like you are in this battle alone.

Bret, there has to be some days that you just want to say, what the heck forget about it all (eating right, exercising).

Bret: More days than not, I want to say not today - what the heck, I want to forget about it all mentally or physically. But I know I can't; I just make it part of my routine. It is just like you said, Pam, first accepting the fact that you have to make this a lifestyle - it isn't always a choice. If you want to take a hold of it, you do it, and the feeling I get when I eat well and work out - it just feels good.

You live in a visual society (body image), how important is it to you to look like a star?

Bret: Never be fooled by a picture. You need to find a body weight you are happy with (getting there brick by brick). People forget that if you are in killer shape, the challenge is to challenge yourself more to keep it there and feel good.

You have gone through some rough spots physically? What gets you through?

Bret: God wasn't ready to deal with me yet... Why I am still here? I am passionate about the things I care about - mind, muscle, music, motorcycles, family and faith.

What next for Bret's future? His endeavors go on and on!

His music, family, touring, book series coming soon (How to Succeed at Almost), partnership with Donald Trump (with Trump Vodka), and so much more waits for all his adoring fans (me being numero Uno).

All I can say is kudos for bringing to light Living with Diabetes in a positive way and keeping it real!

If you have diabetes, take a look at our Living with Diabetes Meal Plan. It will make eating right a lot easier.

The Mayor of the Italian town Varallo had the bright idea to make losing weight a group effort. If the support of the town is not enough to help overweight residents lose, the monetary reward should help to get them going. Men will receive $70 for losing 9 lbs in a month and women will be paid the same for losing 7 lbs. But just wait until you see what the bonus is for keeping the weight off 5 months down the road!

I would love to see U.S. cities follow suit, but unfortunately our country is so overweight that we could go broke with success!

Question :

Weight loss for mentally disabled brother in law?

My brother in law turns 28 this year and he is massive - 142 kilos when he first started. Before you ask, he has been cleared for exercise by his GP; I have almost completed my certificate III in fitness/personal training, and have been trying to help him with his weight loss. He started off fairly well - he lost 5 kilos over the course of two months, which he was continually praised for by both myself and our family - however, he seems to have levelled off a bit. He loses a bit of weight every now and again, only to put it back on the following week; so he s not really GAINING those 5kg back, but he s not really losing any more either. I have tried my best to explain to him how food works in the simplest way possible - he s mentally disabled from an accident as a child, but still seems to grasp the concept of most things I m telling him - and I know he understands the bulk of what I m telling him, but he continues to fluctuate in weight and I am SURE its due to his eating. I have time to exercise with him for 1 hour twice a week as I have a full time job and live clean on the other side of town, as well as having a family of my own and my studies to make time for, and his exercise homework is to walk around his 2.8 km block OR do 400 steps on a step machine I brought over for him each day. When he exercises with me, he really goes all out and I could not be prouder of him, and when I m not there he claims he does his homework MOST days, yet I can t seem to get him to click with the eating. I tried getting him to write down what he eats but he never does; or if he does, he doesnt mention quantities or other details (the other day for example: his "steak and potato" turns out was code for crumbed steak, mashed potato and two tablespoons of tomato sauce. Quite a bit of difference when it comes to calories. That was the only meal of the five he ate that day that he wrote down). I even made him up a few sample meal plans to see if that would guide him but he never stuck to them either; OR, if he did, he wouldn t measure the quantities again. I am at a loss as to how to pursue this - he seems motivated; we re quite close and I often get him excited about his ultimate goal weight of 90 kg; but I can t keep an eye on him all the time. Not to mention it costs a lot in time and fuel to get over and see him, so I m also quite constrained in that instance, and I don t want to charge him for it as he is on a pension and has had it so tough most of his life. I know it sounds selfish and you can think what you like, but its also very demoralising for me to put in the extra time and effort that I could spend with my family just to find out he s gone nowhere with it, or that he hasn t made any real effort with his eating regardless of what I do to motivate him. At the end of the day, hes at that size and age where if he doesn t get this in check, he s going to die in 10 years. Its as easy as that. I try not to use that scare approach with him but I think I m going to have to soon.

I ESPECIALLY direct this question to any experienced personal trainers out there - do you have any suggestions? I am at a loss as to what to do. I m not ready to give up; I am however ready to throw the whole plan out the window and start new with something that works, so long as it DOES work.

I honestly think I m doing everything right - I think its simply a matter of I m missing something. Theres got to be some small thing that the moment I mention it, he clicks. He s got the discipline to do it - in an earlier attempt he stuck with those god awful Dr. Tim diet shakes religiously for a year and was spending $80 a month or something to do it; if he could hold to one of those surely he could manage a simple eating plan. At any rate, any other suggestions would be VERY warmly welcomed

Thanks guys, sincerely

One might wonder, what business is this of yours? weight and health are not mutually exclusive. If you are so hot to change a grown man s food habits, start by appraising your own.
Question :

Life is becoming too overwhelming. Help?

I ve encountered some various problems when I moved to this city for school 3 months ago.

- I live alone, for now, so it s caused quite a bit of isolation for me; I try to join clubs and get involved, but school tends to overwhelm me, hence why I stopped going for the sake of getting my schoolwork done. I haven t made an effort to make friends (because I can t), and at this point, I m used to being alone, but I still don t like it.

- My days tend to switch back and forth between happy ones, and sad/depressing ones. One day, I ll feel like I can do anything and get along with anybody, the next day will either be the same, or it becomes a sad/depressing one. I don t know why I have this tendency.

- I ve fallen for my TA, but I ve made a decision to not ask her out for a cup of coffee until the end of the semester, but she s planning to head back home the day after the final, so I m lost at what to do. She and I established a minor friendship that we would often talk about non-school related subjects, and whenever we see each other, we make eye contact, say hello, and smile. She s beautiful, in and out, and she s single; but whenever I fall for somebody, I start thinking about all of the negatives such as me possibly not being good enough, or good-looking enough for her, etc.

- I have no flirting skills whatsoever. I try to be funny, but it doesn t work out the way I want it to be. I don t know why or how I can be funny and appealing to women.

- I can t force myself to work-out on a regular basis; I am a huge procrastinator when it comes to health and fitness, and I want to get a good body to raise my confidence and perhaps attract my TA. I can t establish a regular workout routine or pattern. I m not fat, but I want to lose weight, while at the same time make some muscle.

- I m doing very well in school, maintaining high grades and all. But that brings little fulfillment to my life; I m always contemplating about what my purpose is here, and I wonder if I ll even be worthy enough to achieve anything significant. I hate walking around in this life without knowing what my purpose is.

- I mentioned wanting to date my TA and all, but I also mentioned about all the negatives I think about whenever I fall for somebody; it s just hard for me to be optimistic unless something about me, physically or mentally, is just right, and they both aren t. I m longing for ever-lasting love, and it hurts every day that I m single.

- I m afraid of going to church; I want to believe, but this fear still persists, no matter what actions I take. I want to get baptized, I want to become a Born-Again Christian, I simply just want to believe that some entity out there will tell me that everything will be ok.

- I have no time to make friends. Even though I don t work, school keeps me busy enough or I m far too nervous to go out there and make friends. I m going to school 7 hours away from home, and not one of my friends transferred to this school at all. I don t want to leave for a different school, but I want to learn how to socialize, be funny, and make new friends.

I feel like I m constantly overwhelmed every day by these issues, and I m at an absolute loss of what to do. I ve grown accustomed to my new school and my new home in the city life (after having lived in a small farm town for my entire life), but the specific details I m currently just hopeless about.

Whenever I think about it all, the more I think that living s just pointless for me. I don t know whether to say I m depressed to the point of suicide, or just completely uninterested and bored with the life I m living now. I don t know if anyone feels the same way, and I m probably not expecting anyone to help me remedy all of these situations, but if anyone has some advice, I d appreciate it greatly.
Answer :
You need to think about this: If you want to attract a possible significant other, you are much better looking when you lose weight. I am a runner, but I am kicking it into high gear by doing core workouts. The truth is, I really want a six-pack this spring, so I ve just started this week doing about 80-120 sit-ups and 40 push-ups, as well as a bit of weight lifting with dumbells, every day. I m working really hard at it.

I lose interest in things I love from time to time, and it s a bit sad. So, you know what I do to cheer me up? Listen to happy music. Such as: Three Little Birds by Bob Marley.

If you re already not focusing attention on religion on this age, I say, why spend your time on it? Of course, being athiest, I have some bias. This is my beleif, though: You only live life once, so make something of it. Accomplish goals, make friendships, get relationships (I just started working on this one).

You need to keep pushing forward, there s always something to be completed. I finally realized that if I want to be a happy person, I really need to get myself a girlfriend, so I ve also just got in the game the last few weeks.

You DO have time to make friends. Why not start by making a Facebook account and add people from your college classes? I just made one a few weeks ago, and to me, it s a great way to start communicating with girls without the embarrassment factor. Once you can build up a friendship on there, you can start talking with them privately whenever you get the chance, and more-so in public.
Question :

Have you ever heard of the movie my big love?

summary: Pastry chef Macky (Sam Milby) has struggled with his weight for most of his life. Its not easy being fat, especially when youre in love with a young socialite columnist named Nia (Kristine Hermosa). Everything is going well until Nia meets Macky, who gets the shock of her life when she sees Macky in his 300-pound glory.

Being the breadwinner of the family, she has to double her effort to meet their daily needs. After a number of failed attempts, Macky finally agrees to be her client. In the process of losing weight, the two gained love and affection for each other.

Aira then agrees to accept an offer to work abroad, separating the two. Two years pass and the Macky who was once laughed at is now one of the most sought-after bachelors in town. Macky now has to choose who really is his big love is it the woman he dreamt of all his life or is it the woman who loved him unconditionally?

if you have heard of this movie what is you favorite quote and favorite scene?

Beating Cancer With Nutrition Back To Health Naturally Natural ...

The most important victories aren't always about losing a few pounds.

Karen fell in love with her active lifestyle. She worked out five days a week, mixing cardiovascular and strength training. An avid cyclist, she was pedaling more than 75 miles a week and becoming the most fit she'd ever been.

Then, in July 2007, she noticed a lump in her breast during her monthly self-exam. She told herself it was nothing - and then thought better of it and went in for a battery of tests.

A week to the day after she noticed the lump she got her diagnosis. It was breast cancer.

Next to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in the United States. Over 182,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). About 2.5 million American women have the disease. Perhaps 42,000 will die.

But Karen was ready to fight back.

Fitness Do You Want A Flat Stomach?

Want a flat belly? 8 foods to avoid Lipstick Powder N Paint

Do you want a flat stomach? I don't know a person who doesn't!

People spend millions, if not billions of dollars, each year in the quest for a flat stomach. Right now there are about 200 or more ab exercise devices out there. There's the ab do-it, the ab rock-it, the ab roller, the ab dolly, and so many more. You would think that with all of these amazing new products that most people would be walking around with that nice, lean mid-section they've always wanted. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

Most, if not all of these products, will do little or nothing to flatten your stomach. And that's because these exercise contraptions cannot eliminate the layer of fat that lies on top of your abs.

In order to be successful at thinning your waistline you must have a basic under standing of how the ab muscles function and how your body burns fat. The first thing that needs to be understood is the difference between fat and muscle. Fat is excess calories and is primarily stored in layers on top of muscle tissue. Muscle is made up of fibers that contract or shorten to produce movement. Fat cannot turn into muscle and muscle cannot turn into fat! However, you can lose muscle and you can gain fat. That's what happens to most people.

So if your goal is to thin your waist line and have a nice flat stomach, the first thing you need to do is decrease / eliminate the layers of fat that are on top of your abs. We all have a flat stomach; it's just some of oar's are covered by excess fat.

The most effective way of flattening your stomach is a combination of strength training (with a extra focus on mid-section), cardiovascular exercise (short, hard workouts), and stable blood sugar (keeps you from adding additional fat and makes it easier for the body to use body fat for fuel).

1. You must do some form of progressive strength training

The primary function of the ab muscle is to flex your torso forward. However, there are also muscles that flex your torso to the side and muscles that rotate your torso. Often times you see people on their ab roller every day doing hundreds of crunches or sit-ups.

If you want to effectively strengthen your stomach you need to incorporate the following types of exercises:

. 1-2 forward flexion exercises (crunch, sit-up, etc.)

. 1-2 side flexion exercises (side bends, side crunches, etc.)

. 1-2 rotational exercises (trunk rotations, standing twists, etc.)

The abs, are muscles just like any other and should be worked at most 3 times per week. You also want to make sure you are training them progressively, working them harder each time.

2. Use short, hard cardio workouts to increase metabolism

Cardio workouts are important because they CAN, if done correctly, increase your metabolism for 4-24 hours or more! This means you are less likely to store any excess calories as body fat because they are more likely to be used by your elevated metabolism. Plus, you are more likely to burn off some excess body fat.

Below is a sample interval workout that can be done with just about any activity (walking, bicycling, swimming, stair climbing, etc.).

Warm up at easy pace 2-5 minutes - Perform 30 seconds of hard work (almost as hard as possible) - Perform 1 minute of moderate work (recovery time-catch breath) - Repeat this process 6-10 times - Cool down at an easy pace for 2-5 minutes

3. Stable blood sugar is the key

And most importantly, you must stabilize your blood sugar! This is by far the most important factor when it comes to burning away that excess body fat and keeping it off! To effectively stabilize your blood sugar you must feed your body frequently; like every 2-3 hours. The key is to give your body only what it needs at that time. Your body burns calories 24 hours a day, so, why would you only feed it once or twice a day? Give your body the fuel it needs: vegetables, fruits, nuts, berries, whole grains, and lean proteins (chicken, fish, lean beef, eggs, etc.).

Many people are too hung up on how much fat is in food, or how healthy of a choice it is. Calories are calories and it doesn't matter where they come from. If there's extra. where's it going? Yup, you guessed it. body fat!

This is not to say that what you eat is not important because it is, it just doesn't have that much of an affect when it comes to fat loss. Try to make healthy choices whenever possible, but don't feel like if you eat a cheeseburger it is guaranteed to be stored as fat.

4. Get the help of a professional

Unfortunately, most people don't know enough about the human body, nutrition, or effective exercise to meet their health and fitness goals. Ask yourself this one question, "Am I happy with my current progress or condition?" If you're not, you should consider getting the help of a qualified personal fitness professional. Don't depend on the information you get from magazines or from your local gym/ health club. A qualified fitness professional can help you achieve your health and fitness goals, and in less time than you would imagine.

Commonly question about Fitness Do You Want A Flat Stomach?

Question :

Want flat stomach, toned aswell but my stomach is quite fat? Need info on diet/fitness also.?

I m an 18 year old female who has lived on junk food and pasta , literally the last year its been pasta pasta pasta. Now i m doing my best to alter my diet after fainting etc. I have included salads, soup, vegetables & flavoured water(dont like regular water) into my diet. I ve never been much of a meat eater i can eat chicken sometimes but im fussy with it , i dont really want to build muscle, its just to get very toned.
...Basically i am 8 stone 10, my overall body is in okay shape except my stomach!!! it s like all my weight goes to my stomach ?! it honstley looks like im 3 months pregnant!!! i dont know why this is?! its the lower abs which are fat, but the upper abs are really i dont know how to explain, upper abs are sort of built/feel hard and i think this is causing my lower abs to stick out more :/ i just look pregnant basically. (I also look bigger because i don t have a big cleavage)

Also have been doing workouts , such as 30 minute abs exercises from youtube or 10 minute glutes and thighs workouts just to mix them up. I find crunches /lying down exercises really sore on my neck and i dont feel i do them right so my workouts for abs are all standing...i find cardio workouts like death, because i get very out of breath im very unfit and just give up, i honestly cant do them:/

Questions:
1) why is it only my stomach that puts on weight?
2) what are good exercises for upper abs?
3)what are good exercises for lower abs?
4) is it better to eat normal sized healthy meals, or lots of small healthy meals?

ps have been trying the special K thing by eating 2 portions for breakfast and lunch, does this work??????
4) is it better to
Answer :
Hi.

I definitely feel your frustration. If it s any comfort to you, you are not alone. The midsection is a common problem for many of us. You provide a lot of detail and asked several questions. Allow me to try to address your questions and refer you to some wonderful articles that I hope will help you.

1) Unfortunately, everyone gains and loses weight differently. We tend to gain weight disproportionately and lose weight proportionately. Very frustrating.

2) and 3) See the articles I list below for examples of great ab exercises for both upper and lower abs.

4) Not sure what you were going to ask ...?

I wish you the best!

Question :

Fitness exercises for a flat stomach?

hi i want to try and lose some weight i do have a bit of a stomache and woundered if any one new of any exersises i could do to help flatten my stomache?
im not lazy as i eat well (cud cut out a bit of the chocolate!) i got trampolinging for three hours a week and horse riding for 1 hour a week! could some one plz help me!!
Answer :
You can t flatten a tummy with exercise, but you can firm the muscles underneath. Bicycyle excercises (where you lay down and alternate elbows to knees) are great as is Pilates. In the meantime, you will have to exercise to reduce fat all over. Move at least 20-30 min w/o stopping three times a week minimum. Cut out salt and alcohol and have small meals throughout the day. Small portions will shrink your tummy faster, Stay away from carbonated beverages and foods that give you gas, they protrude the stomach.
Question :

What is a good fitness routine to get a flat stomach?

I m sixteen and I m pretty petite, I m comfortable with my whole body but the only problem is my large stomach. It makes me look disproportional because every other part is skinny and then my stomach sticks out so much. I swear it looks like I m permanently bloated or pregnant! XD I have a treadmill at home so I m wondering if running everyday for 30 min will make a difference. Doesn t running help reduce fat in every area? Should I run for 30 minutes in the morning and then at night do 100 sit ups? I really want to get my stomach flat before summer is over - that s my goal. Please provide an easy, step by step fitness plan. I never exercise so I need to start w/something easier in the beginning. Also, provide how many days of the week I should work out..etc. Thank you! I really need to start getting active because I m worried since I never work out and continue to splurge on food, that I will get fat!
Answer :
I m sixteen as well. And well I m not petite as you call yourself, but I am very athletic. I do two school sports each year to keep healthy. I am no expert, but a diet will help you maintain your weight, but don t go on those stupid diets that have women stressing on every single pound. Eat less fatty foods, allow at the most one day to eat some fast food or that high sugar food you ve been craving all week long.
Drink sufficient water, I believe it s 8 glassfulls a day for the average human being. I don t keep track, all I know is I bring a waterbottle with me everywhere I go. You will begin to pee(or urinate to be precise) quite a bit until your body acustoms itself to it.

I have several recommendations for a workout:

1. It s summer, you must have time on your hands. Sign up for the gym, and go for an hour or two a day a few times a week. Don t overdo it. Try 24 hour fitness. Open 24 hours a day, so it can fit your schedual. Works out for everyone.

2. If you can t afford the gym, use resources around you. See a nice, quiet, safe area in your town near home. Go out in the morning or evening when it s still light, and jog. I don t recommend running like I do(I m used to it from track&field).
Before you do anything, remember to stretch well. You don t want to strain a muscle. Jog at a pace you feel is good for you, regulate your breathing. And bring a water bottle with you. Music as well helps while you re running. When you re jogging/running, keep your arms at your side never criss-cross across your chest, it tightens your chest and allows less oxygen to flow through your body at a 90 degree angle. Opposite arm, opposite leg. Lift left leg with right arm, and right leg with left arm. Practice at your house for a few minutes until you get a hang of it. And jog/run for as long as you feel comfortable. And each day increase your time by 5-10 minutes.

3. Get yourself a personal trainer. Ask him/her for tips on better fitness and a good diet.

4. Have fun & be active, this is your summer, you shouldn t be worrying so much about your body. As long as you re doing something, and moving around. It should be great. Swimming laps helps your upper body strenght, and legs.
There are so many things you can do.

Like; sign up for a pilates class, or even an areobics class.

It is fun.

Oh, and during the year I recommend a sport or two during school. It helps you stay fit, and attentive towards your grades as well. I ve done wrestling and track. And am signing up for volleyball in the fall. :)

Have fun and good luck. :)

p.s. I know some people who do this, and it s so not healthy for you. Don t go anorexic or bulemic. It does you no good, but only gives your parents a hospital bill.

People don't become overweight from one bad habit.

In fact, it's a confluence of factors that led to the obesity epidemic in this country. You cannot change your body by just "doing everything right starting tomorrow." It doesn't work that way.

The experts say the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to set small, realistic goals.

So, in the first step on your journey to become the person you want to be, we're going to start where every day starts: breakfast.

Face it, studies have shown that your mother was right about this - children who eat breakfast do better in school. And breakfast is just as beneficial for adults as well. In fact, people who ate breakfast were less likely to develop heart disease or diabetes, according to a 2003 study.

It's obvious that everyone should eat breakfast, but so many still skip it for a whole host of reasons - from time to taste and everything in between. The key is simply to eat something.

"Eating a balanced breakfast is the goal - protein, carbohydrate and fat sources," Ofstein says. "But if time is a constraint or you need something convenient, you don't always have to go with the typical breakfast - grab a piece of fruit, yogurt and some nuts or wrap a slice of turkey and cheese in a tortilla."

Check out these five breakfast ideas, if you need inspiration for healthy breakfast foods, or simply make up your own power breakfast. There are so many ways to start your day, but skipping your morning meal is not one of them - always eat breakfast.

Our experts can offer a lot of other small changes you can do right now. Send your questions to our nutritional experts today.
