Apparently, too many women are still not paying attention to the warnings about UV rays and the damage they can cause. The fact that melanoma is the second most common type of cancer among women in their twenties doesn't seem to faze them and they continue to diligently work on their tans.

Seemingly, getting cancer isn't scary enoughbut wrinkles...now those are terrifying!

By Laura McBride

Today I headed off to get another pair of workout pants. Groan. And when I tried on the smaller size that had been hideously tight before? Well, they fit just perfectly - uh-mazing! Mind you, it's still a plus size, and I know I'll be in the dreaded matronly plus sizes for some time (you'll hear the victory cry across the country when I'm into a Large), but never the less a great sense of satisfaction came over me. I dare say a hint of a smile crossed my face even in that ugly fitting room with overhead fluorescent lights - could they make us look any less attractive? It's working.

Pam, my dietitian, tells me I'm right where I should be and that's encouraging. She has given me great tips on eating out, snacks on the run and made me realize I knew just enough about nutrition to be dangerous.

I've been thinking a lot about the denial and subtlety of weight gain lately too. Many wonder how someone can get 100 pounds overweight and not stop somewhere along the way and say, "Hello? That's enough now."

Truth be told, I did stop many times along the way. I always knew yo-yo dieting was bad, but I was absolutely convinced I was on the last diet. There's nothing worse than dieting your way up the scale and there's an entire league of us who have done it.

And then, of course, life happens. Need I say more about care giving, divorce, deaths, blended families, sullen teenagers and perpetual people pleasing? (I'm trying real hard to put that one in remission.)

Eating was always a way to r-e-l-a-x. Ahhhhh It was a way for hubby and I to get away from the house since I work from home (mere steps from the kitchen I might add). It was a break from planning, cooking meals and cleaning - a break from the stresses of life. One night out a week was enjoyable as we lingered over dinner with great conversation. A good cappuccino and a bagel with cream cheese was divine at our local coffee house on a weekend morning.

And while I'm being truthful with myself, I have to also admit I was a heck of a grazer. Just a muffin (nearly a days worth of calories and no nutritional value - such a deal!), or a handful or two of chips, maybe more, but who's counting, right? Ever get caught up in the endless salty/sweet cycle? I want something sweet, now I want something salty, hmm, now I want something sweet again And there is always another opportunity isn't there? It's my birthday, your birthday, his birthdaysomeone's anniversaryIt's Christmas!

Ever hear of those lucky individuals who change one little thing and started losing weight? Ever want to slap them upside the head? They give up soda and voila! The weight starts to come off like magic. How about the women who - oopsey - had a couple of margaritas over the weekend, tee-hee, but still lost a half pound while I ate dry melba toast and cottage cheese and gained a pound. What the?!? I have always had to be very specific in my eating and exercise plan if I was going to get the scale moving downward.

So initially I was feeling, man, this was way too much like work! But already I see it differently. Already I feel how my body uses good, whole food to make me feel great. I'm on the Glycemic Impact plan and after all the diets I have been on - and honey I've been on my fair share - I have finally found one made just for me.

I was a diabetic in the making and when my sugar crashed, let me tell you, it crashed in a mighty way with visibly shaking hands! Not a pretty sight. Not having had that happen since I started this diet, I am here to tell you a scone is not worth it when you can feel this good.

It's not easy to give the old ways up. It's waving good bye to a few things that really meant a lot in my life and it will take time to find new ways. But I am making new ways. I still go to the coffee shop but now I have a "skinny" cappuccino and good conversation. I don't go out to eat as often, but that's okay. When I do, it's lovely and it feels great to be in control of food instead of food controlling me.

I'm learning.

Fitness Too Busy to Lose Weight?

If you want to lose weight, but can't find the time, this is the plan for you.

Blair has revealed she has been too busy to lose her baby weight ...
Blair has revealed she has been too busy to lose her baby weight ...

You're busy. We get it. But having a hectic schedule doesn't mean that you can't achieve your weight-loss goals.

Losing weight can be challenging, even if you have plenty of time on your hands. But if you, like many people, are juggling a career, a family and several other important commitments, it can seem downright impossible.

Perhaps you've given up on dieting because you feel like there simply aren't enough hours in the day to shop for and prepare healthy foods. But are you really too busy to lose weight? Consider this: Taking the time to eat right and exercise will likely give you the energy boost you need to balance all of your commitments.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistic's American Time Use Survey, people spend 41 minutes, on average, at the grocery store. That's not even taking into account the time it takes to travel to and from the store, or the time it takes to actually prepare the food. And it's safe to assume that scanning nutrition labels and hunting down healthier alternatives may take even longer - especially at the start of a new diet program.

Sure, many fast food restaurants now offer healthier menu selections. But before you attempt to lose weight at the drive-thru window, consider this: Such choices are limited and you may still find yourself tempted by the restaurant's standard fattening faire. How many times can you stare down a bacon cheeseburger without giving in to temptation?

There's no quick fix when it comes to losing weight, but the simplicity and convenience of meal delivery can make the process easier. You'll be able to lose weight without cooking, counting calories or even doing dishes - a real bonus for someone with your busy schedule!

Commonly question about Fitness Too Busy to Lose Weight?

Question :

What happens when you have no weight to lose(read details)?

So say if a person is already slim and don t have a lot of fat to lose, BUT you lose weight when you burn more calories than you take in right?-- so if this person is super busy, don t eat a lot because they have too much stuff to do and they are accidently burning way more calories than they eat..WIll they still lose weight? and from where would they lose it?

(im asking in this section because diet&fitness gave me no answers)
Answer :
You will start to burn muscle. You will become weak and unhealthy looking. Your body will suck nutrients form wherever it can, including your bones. This causes early osteoporosis.
Question :

Is there a fitness program that help you gain weight?

I started working out and eating 4000 calories a day for most of the 5 months and I gained 35 lbs, but I stop working out for 1 month because I was busy and I lost 15 lbs. I am at 160 at 5 11.

I am wondering if there any fitness program out there to help be get too 180lbs muscles. Does P90X works for gaining weight, because I want to gain weight and I can t.
Answer :
Weight training is supposed to work. Cardio workouts will helps reduce body fat, so alternate between cardio and weight training
Question :

I want to lose weight but...?

I m a 15 year old girl, 5 4, and I know I am over weight. I forget my exact weight, I think it s between 140-160 pounds? But I know for a fact I am over weight. I would like to lose some of that weight, and I was going to ask my parents about it, but my brother sort of beat me to it. He s also apparently wanted to lose weight, so he tried talking to my parents and telling him the type of diet he wants. They re complying, but they are constantly worrying about him not eating enough, and my mom complains that keeping up with his diet is very difficult. I feel like if I ask to diet too, they ll get really stressed and upset. So I don t think telling them I want to lose weight is a good idea. So how can I lose weight?

I do have another issue. I don t really like vegetables. I ve tried many, but most I really don t like. Is there a way to make them taste better? And also, I want to work out, but I don t know how. I could run in the park, but I m afraid of running into someone I know. I sweat a lot, and in general it d be really embarrassing for me. I was in a fitness class in PE last year, and my friend who did it with me kept on telling me, "um, no offense, but you re sweating like a pig and it s really disgusting." My school does have a gym with machines that I could use after school (although most of the time I am busy after school with play practice), but I m afraid of seeing kids I know and the teachers too.

So how can I lose weight? I cut out all diet soda from my diet, (I m a type 1 diabetic so I can t have regular soda. My blood sugar is fairly regular by the way) and I just drink unsweetened tea and water. What should I eat and how should I exercise? What do I do about my parents?

Planning Mealtime Around Your Workout Routine

Have you ever thought about when you will eat in relation to when you work out? If you are planning to get serious about your workout routine, meal planning

Bodybuilding Workout Routine Plan Bodybuilding and Fitness Program
Bodybuilding Workout Routine Plan Bodybuilding and Fitness Program

Have you ever thought about when you will eat in relation to when you work out? If you are planning to get serious about your workout routine, meal planning becomes even more important than it used to be. After all, you want to make certain you have plenty of energy to make it through your routine. At the same time, you probably want to burn fat while working out rather than burning off the calories you just consumed. So, here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to eating and working out.

Working Out in the Morning

If you plan to work out in the mornings, you might want to eat a light snack before you start your routine. Ideally, this snack should only be about 100 to 200 calories and should be eaten about 30 minutes before you start working out. A piece of fruit, a slice of bread or even a spoonful of peanut butter can all help you get the energy you need to make it through your morning workout. If you can't give yourself 30 minutes to digest your morning snack before you workout, you might want to try having a high-carb snack before you go to bed, such as a glass of hot cocoa. This way, your muscles will be more likely to have some leftover stored energy for your morning routine.

After your morning workout is over, you can help your body recover more effectively by consuming some simple carbs. Grabbing a glass of juice or a handful of whole-grain cereal should do the trick and should hold you over until you are able to sit down and have a real breakfast.

Working Out in the Afternoon

If you workout right before lunch, you should plan on eating a light snack that is rich in carbohydrates and protein about two hours before your workout begins. If you exercise after lunch, on the other hand, you should give yourself about 2 hours to digest your meal before you workout. Then, grab a snack right after you work out in order to help increase your metabolism and to build muscle.

Working Out in the Evening

If you eat dinner before your workout, you should give your body about 2 hours to digest the meal before working out. If you don't eat dinner until after your workout, you should still grab a light snack about 2 hours before working out. This way, you won't be starving after your workout is complete and you will be less likely to overeat. If you can't eat a snack before your workout, try grabbing a satisfying snack such as a handful of nuts right after you workout. This way, your initial hunger can be satisfied and you will be more likely to eat a healthy meal at dinnertime.

Should You Do Aerobic Exercise If Suffering From A Cold ?

Chances are that wherever you live people around you are hacking and coughing lately. Hopefully no one has it worse, like the Swine Flu that's going around.
I usually don't get a cold or flu, but have had a touch of a cough lately.
What should you do about your workout program if you come down with any or all of the above symptoms?
I went to an expert to get some answers, consulting a local doctor.
Here are things to consider to decide if you're well enough to exercise.
A mild to moderate workout should be all right for people who have a cold, but no fever. In fact, exercise can even help someone feel better by temporarily relieving nasal congestion.
My doctor said a quick rule to remember is to go ahead and exercise if the signs and symptoms are above the neck, like sneezing, sniffling, runny nose, sore throat.
If the ailments extend below the neck, it's best to postpone the workout for problems such as chest congestion, deep cough or upset stomach.
Also, put off your workout if you have a fever, fatigue or widespread muscle aches.
If your below the neck symptoms are there, but minor, you still might choose to work out. If you do exercise when sick, use common sense and listen to your body. If you start feeling worse while exercising, then stop.
When you start feeling better, gradually work back into your regular workout return.
And one final piece of advice from my doctor: Wash your hands frequently. It's the No. 1 way to reduce your risk of catching a cold.

Commonly question about Should you exercise with a cold?

Question :

Should I drink cold or warm water after exercise?

It s been a question to me that I really want to know if what should or what is proper to do after working out. I always drink cold water after exercise.. Should I drink warm water after so my metabolism would be fast?
Answer :
Makes no difference. Whatever works for YOU.
Question :

I have a cold coming on - should i exercise?

I usually go to the gym 4 times a week. Should i be exercising with a cold? I would usually do 30 mins medium cardiac and weights or swim for 30 mins. Any siggestions?
Answer :
Working out can prolong a cold. Doesn t mean you can t do it, just take it easier than normal.

You don t want to spread your cold so maybe try taking a jog outside (as long as its not cold, rainy, etc.) or see if you can swim in a local pond (go to the beach if you are near one!) for your cardio.

As far a weights... lift things around the house, do push ups... be creative! You should go lighter anyway.

Hope this helps! =)
Question :

I feel light I am getting a cold. Should I exercise today?

I have a sore throat and someone told me that I should do aerobic exercise to help it go away faster.
Answer :
i find that "sweating it out" works wonders for me. i ve sweat it out through things that most doctors would recommend rest for (bronchitis!!!) but it seems i get better more quickly by pushing through.

the general safety and health guide line is that if your problem is from the neck up you can workout, if it s below the neck you need to rest (flu like symptoms: achey, queesey... etc, or cold in your chest)

personally i follow that, with the exception of the chest cold, i still push through.

Fitness Double Your Weight Loss: The Write Idea

Wouldn't it be nice if there was something you could do to double your weight loss efforts?

Weight Loss Slim Fit World
Weight Loss Slim Fit World

Wouldn't it be nice if there was something you could do to double your weight loss efforts? According to one of the largest and longest running weight-loss trials ever conducted, there is.

What's this new weight-loss miracle? Is it a drug? A new machine for blasting your abs? A crazy diet where you eat nothing but broccoli?

No. It's simply your keyboard. Keeping a food diary - recording what you eat throughout the day - can double a person's weight loss efforts, according to a study conducted by Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research. The study, which was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that keeping a daily record can keep your diet on track.

"The more food records people kept, the more weight they lost," said Kaiser Permanente lead author Jack Hollis Ph.D. "Those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. It seems that the simple act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume fewer calories."

The average weight loss over 6 months was roughly 13 pounds, with more than two-thirds of the nearly 1,700 participants losing at least 9 pounds. Those who participated were asked to follow the heart-healthy DASH diet, which is rich in fruits and vegetables, attend weekly support group sessions and exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, as well as tracking what they ate. Participants who used their daily food journals doubled their results.

With more than two-thirds of Americans overweight - and the African American community being particularly susceptible to problems linked to obesity, like heart disease and diabetes - this study was one of the few trials to have a large percentage of African Americans - nearly half of the participants. "If we all just lost 9 pounds, like the majority of people in this study did, our nation would see vast decreases in hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke," noted study co-author Victor Stevens, Ph.D., who found in a previous study that losing as little as 5 pounds can reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure by 20 percent.

If it's as simple as tracking what you eat to lose weight, then fire up the computer. If you eat it, type it in. Food diaries increase accountability and demonstrate where excess calories are coming from according to study participants.

Keeping a food diary doesn't have to be a formal thing, noted Dr. Keith Bachman in the press release. Bachman, who heads Kaiser Permanente's Weight Management Initiative, explained that journaling helps people reflect on what they eat, helping them become aware of their habits and, hopefully, changing their behavior.

"Every day I hear patients say they can't lose weight," he said. "This study shows that most people can lose weight if they have the right tools and support. And food journaling in conjunction with a weight management program or class is the ideal combination of tools and support."

What have you eaten today? Have you tried keeping a food journal? Did it work? Let us know and post a comment below.

Strength training as a form of exercise gets little to no attention compared to cardiovascular training.

There are many benefits of strength training such as.

Increases muscle mass, and muscle burns more calories than fat. Even at rest, your body will

burn more calories if you strength train regularly. As muscle mass increases, metabolism

increases, making it easier to maintain a healthy body weight. If you dont intentionally

rebuild muscle through exercise, every ten years you will need to eat 150-450 less calories

each day to maintain your current weight.

Slows bone loss that accompanies aging and increases bone density.

Maintains or increases joint flexibility.

Helps to manage or reduce pain from ailments such as arthritis and old injuries.

We often think about obesity as it relates to the United States, but it's a worldwide concern. Former President Bill Clinton addressed a room of 170 teachers about an initiative he has taken with in partnership with the American Heart Association. This is a telling statement from the article published by the Associated Press:

"The only thing that's gone up less than the rate of inflation in the last decade are clothes, consumer electronics and food," Clinton said. "In some cases, a meal out is the only vacation working people have."
