The most important victories aren't always about losing a few pounds.

Karen fell in love with her active lifestyle. She worked out five days a week, mixing cardiovascular and strength training. An avid cyclist, she was pedaling more than 75 miles a week and becoming the most fit she'd ever been.

Then, in July 2007, she noticed a lump in her breast during her monthly self-exam. She told herself it was nothing - and then thought better of it and went in for a battery of tests.

A week to the day after she noticed the lump she got her diagnosis. It was breast cancer.

Next to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in the United States. Over 182,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). About 2.5 million American women have the disease. Perhaps 42,000 will die.

But Karen was ready to fight back.
