1. Don’t blame pigs. H1N1, the so-called swine flu, is a strain of virus that shares genes with flu viruses that affect pigs. The angst concerning the possible pig-related risk of contracting H1N1 is unwarranted, however. For example, getting the virus doesn’t involve coming into contact with pigs. In fact, some evidence exists that individuals who regularly come into contact with pigs may be immune to swine flu. Furthermore, eating pork will not expose a person to the swine flu virus.

2. Everything is relative. The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a multistage plan for responding to potentially serious health emergencies. Each of the five stages represents a different level of response. Once H1N1 swine flu reaches the most serious level (stage 5), it means that the virus has become pandemic (i.e., affecting a high percentage of the population in at least two countries in separate WHO regions).

3. A vexing variation. The flu is a highly contagious viral disease that is characterized by having any number of symptoms, including fever, bodily aches and pains, cough, sore throat, and inflammation of the respiratory passages. Although thousands of different kinds of viruses can cause the flu, new strains of flu emerge all of the time - each different than the one before it. H1N1 is a new different strain of virus in which the symptoms are sometimes more severe than typical flu symptoms.

4. Passing it on. The H1N1 flu virus is spread the same way any virus is transmitted - through person-to-person contact. Such contact typically involves a situation in which a person who has the virus coughs or sneezes. The droplets in the air can transmit the virus to anyone who comes into contact with this unwanted germ-laden dispatch. Another way that you can become infected is when you touch something (e.g., a surface or an object) that has the flu virus on it and then you touch your mouth or nose.

5. Ask the experts. If you experience flu-like symptoms, you should contact your physician’s office immediately. In addition, until your appointment, you should stay home. Allow your doctor to determine what illness, if any, you have and recommend a prescribed plan of action for addressing your condition.  

6. Nothing is forever. If you get H1N1 flu, the duration of your illness will depend on the severity of your case. You become contagious the day before your symptoms first appear and remain contagious for approximately 5 to 7 days. After your fever subsides, you should stay home for at least 24 hours.  

7. What do they mean? Flu-like symptoms can mean different things to different people. You should ascertain whether you have H1N1 swine flu, seasonal flu, or just a crummy cold. Truth be known, you may not be able to definitively determine what flu virus you have. The only valid way to discover what you have is to be tested, and even then, such tests aren’t always accurate.

8. Enhancing the odds. A number of steps can be undertaken to improve your chances of not contacting H1N1 flu. Among the common sense precautions that can be taken are to keep your hands clean; avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth if you have touched something that may carry the infection; give a wide berth to individuals who are sick with the flu; and get an H1N1 flu vaccination.

9. What’s the difference? One of the key issues involving H1N1 flu is understanding how it compares with seasonal flu in terms if its severity and infection rates. At the present time, most individuals with H1N1 flu seem to not need medical care or antiviral drugs - a situation that also is true of seasonal flu. Similarly, most people with flu symptoms do not need to be tested for H1N1 flu because the test results do not change how they are treated. What is significantly different between the two kinds of flu is what group is affected by each type. H1N1 flu caused a greater degree of disease burden (i.e., number of cases and deaths) in people younger than 25 years of age than in individuals 65 years and older, which is a dramatic departure from the norm.

10. The numbers don’t lie. H1N1 flu is a serious health concern. Federal health officials estimate that, to date, swine flu has sickened about 50 million Americans and has killed more than 10,000 people.

Teen starting a new life of fitness! Need EVERY type of facts, details, advice, EVERYTHING! PLZ HELP! ?

K hi I m a 15 year old teen wanting to go from skinny to big bulky and looking great! Six pack huge chest big arms toned legs everything! Well im skinny and I kinda get made fun of plus I m 6 2 which makes it worse! I get called slim, tree, string bean, toothpick, anything u can think of! To start off i use the xbox kinect to start my working out. I use dance games and sport games. After im done with about an hour and a half of that im sweating so much and everything feels worked out and i feel a little sore. One additional detail is i have EXTREMELY HIGH metabolism! I can eat burgers cakes and candy aaaall day but i wont gain a pound! My problem is Idk ANYTHING about bodybuilding besides eating lots of protein :( I need to know EVERYTHING I need to do in order to get a perfect body! So here s a list of wut I really want to know :
should I stop the kinect workout
wut workouts do I do and wut to do as I progress
wut to eat! How many grams of minerals and vitamins proteins etc. Do I eat.
wut foods are the best to help gain muscle
wut snacks are good for helping bulk up
how long is this entire process gonna take I know about a year but tell me if I m wrong
will my high metabolism effect this process :(

Doing aerobics exercises wont lead to massive muscle gain. You should do about 15 mins of aerobics to get your heart rate up. You should buy some free weights. You must keep your hear rate while lifting. Heavier weights and less reps bulk you up. Lighter weights and more reps tones you up. Tricky part with weights is to do it with the right form. There are tons of videos on you tube showing different body building excessive you can do with just using barbells. If you don t see results just stick with it.

So I have a few questions to ask in one. its about diet and fitness.
I ve always been having issues with myself and I need some answers answered!
1. How much do anorexics eat a day/ how much do they work out (hours)? please dont answer in calories just tell me what food and the portion.
2. what exactly would an anorexic eat per day, what foods exactly?
3. how much do they loose a week?
4. any pills or things to take that work help loose weight?
if u dont mind pls make me a week program of exact work out times and what to eat what hours to eat, i might seem silly asking such questions but i need somthing effective! and i have no idea how much an anorexic pushes them selves im always worried to workout alot when i eat a little cause i dont know if i can. if u have any other advice pls let me know. thank u.

first there is no silly question. just an answer you dont have. second,anorexia is a mental disease. that requires help. and if you think that is the way to go, then see a shrink. they don t work out, they vomit. which in turn takes away the vitamins and minerals that keep a body strong. WRONG WAY TO DO THIS. understand also that most models, are fat. yes i said fat. most female models have better than 30% body fat. no muscle. ideal for women is 16 to 23%. it is possible to look like a model and still be fat. not what you want.
use this analogy. you want to go on a 2,000 mile trip. you hop in the car with no gas, how far do you think you would get. no where. thats your body. fuel it.
so....... rule of thumb. a serving size is the palm of your hand. you need protein, carbohydrates(complex), and some fats(omega) every meal. 40/40/20. and you should eat 5 to 6 meals a day 3 hours apart. food should include, poultry, fish, vegies, dairy, and fruits. exercise at your convenience. about an hour 4 to 5 times a week. there is no exact time. use the push pull method to start. push includes chest, shoulders, tri s. pull is back, and bi s. then legs. 3 exercises per part, 3 sets, 12 reps. cardio is 4 times a week right after your workout and once just cardio. 20 mins with interval training. use this for a couple of months, then you need to switch it up. find info at the bookstore. hope this helps
