So with the July 4th holiday over, the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog-Eating Contest went on for its 92nd year.

American, Joey Chestnut, was the winner, bringing back the title to the United States from Japan's Takeru Kobayashi. Chestnut was able to consume 66 hot dogs, with buns, in 12 minutes. Wow! That sure is a lot of dogs.

I wonder how he felt, physically, over the excitement of winning and the massive amount of beef franks in his stomach. How can one consume that many calories in one day and he not be overweight? Studies show that people who are competitive eaters train, yes train, their stomach to a capacity so large that the trigger for fullness from the brain takes longer.

His competitor Kobayashi, only got down 63. Actually he ate 64, but suffered a reversal of fortune as they call it (a fancier way of saying he threw it up). We need a recount! He chewed it, that should count for something...maybe a a hot dog?

A huge motivator to take on this disgusting challenge could have been the $30,000 prize money. Goes to show that people can do anything for money!

Question :

Dogs Suited For Apartment Life?

I d like some ideas of breeds that do well in a one bedroom (rather large) apartment with a fenced in back yard?

My fiancee and I own two other dogs, a Great Pyrenees/Australian Shepherd mix, and a toy poodle, both males that do well with all dog sizes, but we d prefer a smaller dog

The dog would get ample exercise (there is a pet-friendly treadmill in our fitness center, dogs are allowed in the pool, and we go on frequent long walks after dusk.)

Keep in mind our dogs do like to play, so something fragile probably won t do well with the 70 pound Great Pyr. We re adopting from a shelter, so the breeds listed will help influence what we re looking at (mixes, pure breeds, etc).
Answer :
Animal Planet s website has a great "dog breed selector" that can help you. Follow the link below, and answer the questions, and it will provide you with a list of dogs that should fit well in your home.

There are a few questions there that I can t answer on your behalf (weather tolerance, etc.), or else I d send you the list of their recommendations.

Question :

How can I improve my dogs fitness and make him much more muscular?

Help would be appreciated
Answer :
Play lots of fetch/ frisbee. Put some kind of weight on him when walking or going out like a doggy back pack and fill it with some stuff. Feed a good brand of food with lots of protein.
Question :

Is it illegal for dogs to walk around freely into fitness centers or health clubs meant for humans?

I went to a parkour fitness place and saw a dog walking around through all the people who were working out and it seemed really unhealthy. It wasn t a helper dog, it was just the owner s dog walking around, jumping on the equipment that people would be using and working out as if it were a person. The place is just meant for human use though. Is that not illegal?
Answer :
Contact the management! Maybe they re not aware of what the owner s dog is doing.

Most dogs are filthy with their excrement, worms and parasite. You don t want those on the exercise equipment you re gonna use next.

There are enough problems with staph & MRSA from gym equipment to worry about dog-borne pathogens also.

==========

I would also consider changing fitness centers, since this one is clearly not conducive to good health!
