All of the buzz surrounding KFC's Double Down sandwich - and I use the term "sandwich" loosely - had me struggling for three days with the idea of eating one. Yes, I love fried chicken, bacon and cheese. However, I am trying to eat healthy and generally shy away from "special sauces."

After languishing over this fast-food monstrosity for almost a week, I discovered that they would be extending what was supposed to be a 6-week run of the sandwich "so meaty, there's no room for a bun," because of consumer demand. I decided it was time to try the Double Down.

Where's the bun?

The nutrition facts were not nearly as appalling as I had guessed. The Double D weighs in at 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and 1380 milligrams of sodium. It's certainly not healthy, but about on par with McDonald's Big Mac and somewhere in the upper-middle class of fast-food sandwiches.

"We generally recommend around 30% or less total calories from fat - and this sandwich is over 50% fat and about twice the sodium suggested for a single meal. They do have a grilled option that is a bit lower in calories and fat (45%), but the improvement is minimal and the grilled version is actually higher in sodium."

Not much point in trying to "healthy-up" a bacon and cheese-filled meat sandwich, so I went with the original recipe. I gathered up my bravest coworkers and we doubled down for lunch. While the Colonel was a little stingy with the bacon, and the special sauce was a little strange, we were all pleasantly surprised with the size and taste.

Greased up and teetering on the edge of a food coma, I wondered how this revolutionary sandwich ranked in the pantheon of fast-food monsters. Sure, it seems excessive and unnecessary, but is it really that bad?

"There are plenty of worse things to eat," says Pam. "I would much prefer if you limited the bacon and cheese and opted for some lettuce and tomatoes instead."

I decided to find some of those worse things to make me feel better about eating the Double Down.

Worst Chicken Sandwich
Burger King's TenderCrisp Chicken Sandwich has a whopping 800 calories, 46 grams of fat and 1640 milligrams of sodium - 160 more than the American Heart Association's recommended daily allowance. Have it your way with fries and soda and you're getting your entire daily fat, calories and sodium allowances in one meal.

Worst Fast-Food Burger
Carl's Jr.'s Western Bacon Six Dollar Burger is filled with bacon, onion rings, tangy BBQ sauce and two slices of cheese. This adds up to 1020 calories, 53 grams of fat and 2520 milligrams of sodium. You can actually do worse than this if you double the meat of this or several other fast-food chain specialty burgers.

The All-Time Worst Ever!
When it comes to excess and courting controversy, Chandler, Arizona's Heart Attack Grill has the market cornered. They in no way pretend their food is healthy. In fact, they relish the fact that it isn't - that's their marketing angle.

With names like Double Bypass Burger and Flatliner Fries (cooked in pure lard), you know you're in for a high-calorie, fat-laden meal. But how unhealthy the food is, isn'treally known explains Heart Attack Grill's owner Dr. Jon (not a real doctor):

"As far as nutritional information is concerned, we do not provide it. Basically, because we do not know. If one were to ponder the number of calories in a burger, he would already be off on the wrong foot. It's a philosophical thing."

Estimates put their Quadruple Bypass Burger (four beef patties) at around 8,000 calories, making it far and away the worst sandwich you can eat. Luckily, they provide wheelchairs to wheel you back to your car after you eat this tower of beef and cheese.

So, you can always do worse, but try and make better choices at the drive-thru. You should limit your fast-food meals when possible, but if you decide to try the Double Down, maybe you can get some satisfaction liketimeless rocker Mick Jagger, who told Jimmy Kimmel about this unique sandwich: "It's two fried chicken breasts ... No bun! That's crazy! Crazy delicious."
